Bosch dishwashers are universally efficient and reliable. The popular 300, 500, 800, and Benchmark models all include an adjustable RackMatic system. These models also use the same pump system and motor. All Bosch dishwashers can be mounted flush with the surrounding cabinetry for a sleek built-in appearance.
Many Bosch dishwashers include sensor systems that detect the number and type of dishes in the racks and automatically adjust the dishwasher settings to provide the optimal temperature, water pressure, and wash and rinse cycles. They also include a heating chamber with powerful coils that heat the water to efficiently clean the dishes.
One feature that sets Bosch apart from the competition is the use of two motors in the system rather than one. These dual motors simultaneously wash and drain. The dishwasher sensors evaluate the cleanliness of the water throughout the wash and rinse cycles and use this information to determine how many rinse cycles the dishes need to reach optimal cleanliness.
Rather than using a heating element to dry the dishes, Bosch dishwashers often incorporate a condensation drying method. During this process, the hot water condenses on the cool stainless-steel interior to dry the dishes naturally with minimal energy consumption.
Common Bosch Dishwasher Problems
Bosch dishwashers are prized for their reliability, but even the best dishwashers can eventually develop problems. Here are some of the more common problems you may encounter with your Bosch dishwasher, along with suggested part replacements and other solutions.
Dirty Dishes at the End of the Cycle
The sensors in Bosch dishwashers ensure a thorough and high-quality cleaning. If your dishes are still dirty at the end of the cycle, there's a problem. Likely culprits include:
- Dirty filter: You should clean the dishwasher filter periodically so fresh water can flow through easily.
- Overloaded dishwasher: Review your product manual for the proper loading procedures. Make sure the dishwasher arm is not blocked and that there is adequate space between dishes.
- Clogged spray arm: Small food particles like quinoa can clog the dishwasher spray arm, but such minor clogs can be removed by unscrewing the spray arm and cleaning it with a toothpick or pin. If the spray arm is severely clogged, the best solution is to replace it, which for most dishwashers is necessary at least once in their 10-year life span.
- Damaged spray arm mount: The force of the water coming through the spray arm is what propels it. Cleaning the arm mount may help if it's not rotating smoothly, but if the arm is in any way damaged, you're better off replacing it.
- Faulty sensors: A malfunctioning sensor may send inaccurate information about how many dishes are in the rack and how clean they are. This requires a sensor replacement.
Standing Water in the Dishwasher
If you open your dishwasher at the end of the cycle and find water standing in the bottom, there's a drainage problem. This may be the result of:
- Faulty impeller: If the impeller in the bottom of the dishwasher doesn't move, you likely need to replace this part.
- Broken drain pump: You can check the functionality of the drain pump if you have a multimeter, and if the pump isn't working, you need to replace it. Check the pump seal as well, and consider purchasing a new one if the current seal is damaged or aging.
- Blocked drain hose: Water won't flow properly through a drain hose with clogs or kinks in it. Remove the drain hose and examine it for problems, then determine whether the hose can be repaired or needs to be replaced.
- Clogged drain: Manually cleaning a clogged dishwasher drain may resolve the issue if all other parts are functioning properly.
System Randomly Fills With Water or Doesn't Fill at All
If your dishwasher is filling up with water when you're not running it, it likely has a damaged water inlet valve that doesn't close properly at the end of a cycle. If it's not getting water at all, the valve is probably stuck in a closed position. You cannot repair this part, so you'll need to buy a replacement.
Dishes Aren't Drying
If your dishes remain wet at the end of the cycle, there are a few components that could be to blame. Things to look out for are:
- Faulty vent: Check for and remove any obstructions to the vent. If the vent doesn't open, you'll need to repair it.
- Broken vent fan motor: With a multimeter, check for continuity in the vent fan motor. If this part isn't functioning, replace it.
- Malfunctioning heating element: If your dishwasher model uses a heating element, check it with a multimeter to see if it's functioning. If the element doesn't heat properly, you'll need to purchase a new one.
Leaking Water
You never want to see water leaking out of your dishwasher. If the floor in front of the dishwasher is wet, you should perform the same checks as you would for an issue with standing water in the dishwater. You should also check the dishwasher float and float switch. These parts are responsible for letting the dishwasher know when the water level is too high. You may need to replace them if they're not communicating the right information.
